Capturing Legacy on the Family Farm: A Heartfelt Session in Calaveras County
There’s something truly special about capturing memories on a family farm, especially in the beautiful landscapes of Calaveras County. I was recently connected to a local family through a referral on Instagram. Initially, it was all business—I was simply on the hunt for bunnies to borrow for our Spring Sessions at The Candor Studio, located just a short drive from Jackson, CA. Little did I know, that quick visit would blossom into a friendship and one of the most meaningful Legacy Sessions I’ve had the pleasure of photographing in the foothills surrounding Amador.
Their farm, nestled in the scenic rolling hills of Valley Springs, is nothing short of magical. With over 50 animals on the property, including the sweetest bunnies that would later charm our studio clients, it was a picturesque scene of rustic charm and family. They breed bunnies right there on the property, so if you’ve been dreaming of a fluffy companion, I now have the inside connection for you—right here in Amador County.
I was invited to stay and document their family in their element. What was supposed to be a simple portrait session quickly evolved into something so much deeper. I was welcomed into their everyday life—walking the property as the girls helped tend to the animals, laughter echoing across the fields as they shared stories of growing up on the farm. These aren’t little ones anymore—they’re confident, capable teenagers, already a part of the rhythm and responsibility of farm life. It was beautiful to witness—the way they moved with grace and strength, caring for the animals and supporting the day-to-day life of their homestead.
This is what Legacy Photography is all about—capturing not only the posed moments but the real ones. The everyday magic that makes up a family’s story: the daily life, the animals growing older, and the teenagers still at home before they set off into the world. These are the memories that time too often sweeps away, but we chose to preserve them, right here in the heart of Amador.
